Add an AI notice to Crisp
Short answer: If Crisp's AI, or an AI plugin, replies in your chatbox to people in the EU, say so in the welcome message: Settings > Chatbox Settings > Chatbox Appearance > Welcome Message. Article 50(1) of the EU AI Act has applied since 2 August 2026. The legal duty sits with the provider of the AI, but you control the text visitors see.
Crisp is a popular chatbox with European users, and many Crisp workspaces now answer visitors with AI — either Crisp's own AI features or an AI plugin connected to the chatbox. If people in the EU chat with that AI, Article 50(1) of the EU AI Act may require a clear notice. Here is when it applies and where it goes in Crisp.
When Article 50(1) can apply to your Crisp chat
Since 2 August 2026, Article 50(1) of the EU AI Act requires that people are told when they are interacting with an AI system, unless that is already obvious. It is based on where the visitor is, not where your business is registered, so a non-EU company with EU visitors is in scope for those conversations.
In Crisp, the question is simply: does anything other than a person write replies in the chatbox? If Crisp's AI answers from your knowledge base, or you have connected an AI chatbot plugin, visitors in those conversations are talking to an AI system. If only your team ever types replies, Article 50(1) is not about your chatbox at all.
Crisp also runs automated "Triggers" and scenario messages. A fixed message you wrote that fires on a timer is not the same thing as AI, but if your setup mixes automated messages, AI replies and humans in one thread, the safest reading is to disclose AI at the start.
Remember that customisations in Crisp apply per workspace. If one workspace powers several websites, one notice covers all of them — but check each site actually shows it.
Who is legally responsible? Article 50(1) puts the duty on the provider of the AI - Crisp for its own AI features, or the maker of any AI plugin you have connected. If you wrote your own AI integration, you are likely the provider yourself. Either way, the chatbox text visitors see is controlled in your settings.
Article 50(5) adds that the information must be clear and distinguishable, given at the latest at the first interaction, and meet the applicable accessibility requirements. In practice: use real text, not only an icon, with enough contrast to read.
Where to put the notice in Crisp
The notice belongs in the chatbox's own text settings, which is what the visitor sees when they open the chat. The kit's HTML snippet is an optional extra on your site.
1. The welcome message
In Crisp, go to Settings → Chatbox Settings → Chatbox Appearance and open Welcome Message. This is the first greeting visitors see when the chatbox opens, so it is the natural place for the notice. Crisp saves the change automatically.
2. Advanced texts (paid plans)
For more control, go to Settings → Chatbox Settings → Chatbox Appearance → Chatbox Theme → Advanced Chatbox Customization. The Texts area lets you edit labels, system messages and welcome wording. Crisp notes that advanced customisation is on paid plans; the Free plan keeps simpler appearance options.
3. Per-language wording
In the same advanced area, Locales lets you set a default text and add translated overrides per language. Crisp auto-detects the visitor's browser language, so adding the notice in German, French, Spanish, Italian and Dutch means EU visitors see it in their own language. Those five are included in the Business kit.
4. Your AI plugin's greeting
If a third-party AI plugin answers in your Crisp chatbox, most have their own greeting or intro message setting. Put the notice there too, so the first AI reply identifies itself.
5. The HTML snippet (optional)
Paste the kit's snippet into your site footer so the notice is visible even before the chatbox is opened.
Crisp recently moved chatbox customisation out of a separate plugin and into the main settings. If your screens look different, search Crisp's knowledge base for "welcome message" or "customize the chatbox".
Example notice line
Hi! You're chatting with an AI assistant. Type "human" to reach our team.
Only promise a route to a person if your setup really offers one. Keep the first sentence about AI, so it is seen even if the message is cut short on mobile. The exact wording isn't set by the European Commission — it just needs to be clear.
What this page is not
We are not a partner of Crisp and are not affiliated with or endorsed by them. This page covers Article 50(1) chatbot transparency only — not the rest of the EU AI Act, such as high-risk systems, general-purpose AI models or AI-generated content labelling, and not GDPR. It is general information, not legal advice. If your AI use goes beyond a customer chat, get proper legal advice.
